Guide, tables and sources

Linear feet of baseboard minus doorways, and the number of pieces.

Baseboard runs around the room except at doorways. The calculator takes the perimeter, subtracts the door openings, adds waste for the miter cuts and counts the pieces.

If you're cutting tile baseboard from your floor tiles, it also tells you how many strips you get per tile and how many tiles that takes.

How to use

  1. Enter the room size, several rooms, or type the perimeter.
  2. Set the number of doorways and their width.
  3. Choose the piece length sold in your store.
  4. For tile baseboard, tick "Cut from floor tiles" and enter the tile size and baseboard height.

Waste for corners

Each inside and outside corner needs a miter or coped cut, and short leftovers rarely fit anywhere else. 10% extra covers a normal room; add more for rooms with many short walls.

Tile baseboard

A 24 in tile cut into 3 in strips gives 7 strips 24 in long. The calculator leaves about 1/8 in for each saw cut.

Where the numbers come from

Coverage and consumption figures come from manufacturer data sheets and published standards:

Frequently asked questions

How much baseboard do I need for a 12 × 12 room?

The perimeter is 48 ft. Minus a 3 ft doorway, 45 ft; plus 10% waste, about 50 ft: seven 8 ft pieces or five 12 ft pieces.

Do I subtract doorways from baseboard?

Yes, the width of each doorway. Closets with doors count as doorways too.

What length does baseboard come in?

In the US, usually 8, 12 and 16 ft. Longer pieces mean fewer joints on long walls.

How tall should baseboard be?

3 to 5 in is common; taller baseboards suit higher ceilings. Tile baseboard is usually 3 in.
