Guide, tables and sources

Boxes of laminate flooring and underlayment for any room.

Laminate boxes usually hold 15 to 25 sq ft. Enter your room and the box coverage, and the calculator adds the waste and rounds up to whole boxes.

You also get the underlayment area and the perimeter for the baseboard.

How to use

  1. Enter the room size or several rooms.
  2. Pick the layout; the waste allowance follows it.
  3. Type the coverage per box from the label.
  4. Buy the boxes shown, from the same production batch.

Waste for laminate

Pergo's guide says to multiply the floor area by 1.1 and round the boxes up. Start each row with the offcut from the previous one to keep waste low.

Acclimatize the planks

Leave the closed boxes in the room for about 48 hours before installing, so the planks adjust to its temperature and humidity.

Where the numbers come from

Coverage and consumption figures come from manufacturer data sheets and published standards:

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes of laminate for a 12 × 12 room?

144 sq ft plus 10% is 158 sq ft. With 20 sq ft boxes, 8 boxes.

How much extra laminate should I buy?

10% for straight installation, 15% for diagonal. Keep one spare box for repairs.

Do I need underlayment for laminate?

Yes, unless it's pre-attached. Its area equals the floor area; rolls overlap only at the seams if the instructions say so.

How do I measure a room for laminate?

Length × width of each rectangle; for L-shaped rooms use the L option. The square footage calculator helps with odd shapes.
