Guide, tables and sources

Pounds or kilograms of texture for walls and ceilings, from fine to coarse.

Textured finishes are applied much thicker than paint, so they're sold by weight. Fine textures use about 1 kg per m² (20 lb per 100 sq ft); coarse ones two or three times that.

Choose fine, medium or coarse, or type the consumption printed on the bucket.

How to use

  1. Enter the walls and subtract doors and windows. Tick the ceiling for a textured ceiling.
  2. Pick fine, medium or coarse, or type the product's consumption.
  3. Read the total weight and the packages to buy.

Texture consumption

Coral lists about 1 kg/m² for its acrylic texture and Suvinil about 25 m² per 25 kg; heavier finishes such as SikaWall 412 use 2.3 kg/m². Spray-on knockdown and orange peel use less, roughly the fine figure.

Where the numbers come from

Coverage and consumption figures come from manufacturer data sheets and published standards:

Frequently asked questions

How much texture do I need per square foot?

About 0.2 lb per sq ft (1 kg/m²) for fine textures, up to 0.5 lb per sq ft for coarse ones.

How many square feet does a 50 lb bag of texture cover?

Around 240 sq ft for a fine texture and about 100 sq ft for a coarse one.

Do I need to prime before texturing?

Yes, on bare drywall or plaster, so the texture bonds evenly.

Can I paint over texture?

Yes, once it's dry. Textured walls take more paint; lower the coverage in the paint calculator by about a quarter.
